Artist Bios

Canadian filmmaker Ellen Besen taught at Sheridan College's School of Animation from 1987 to 2002. Throughout her career, she has directed award-winning films for the National Film Board of Canada and written extensively on the subject of animation.

A seminal figure in the New York avant garde art scene of the 1950's onward, Robert Breer (1926 - 2011) was an experimental filmmaker, painter, and kinetic sculptor. He created dozens of animated shorts in a career that spanned more than half a century.

Sky David (formerly known as Dennis Pies) is an American artist and animator. In the early 1970's he attended the influential experimental animation program at CalArts, paying tuition with money he received as a Vietnam veteran.

Bernard Longpré (1937 - 2002) was a Québécois filmmaker and animator. He collaborated on numerous memorable productions during a career of more than 30 years at The National Film Board of Canada.

Celebrated as a pioneer of queer cinema and matriarch of lesbian experimental filmmaking, Barbara Hammer (1939 - 2019) inspired generations through her film & video work, performance and activism.

Frank & Caroline Mouris are perhaps best known for their meticulously crafted eccentric and endearing animations from the late 1960's & 70's which have influenced countless other artists and become cult favourites. They currently breed dogs in upstate New York.

Recognized for her vibrant and distinct visual style reminiscent of cubist and futurist paintings, Sara Petty has created award-winning independent animated shorts as well as worked in the commercial industry at various production studios.

Born in Peru, Madi Piller is an experimental filmmaker, animator, programmer and independent curator based in Toronto where she runs the analogue film studio space, PIX Film Productions.

Tatsuo Shimamura is a Japanese animator, film producer and professor. In the early 1970's he established his own independent animation company which has evolved into one of the largest CG and VFX production studios in the country.

Daniel Suter is a Swiss animator, illustrator and educator. In 1970 he co-founded the production company Studio GDS with Claude Luyet and Georges Schwizgebel.

John Whitney (1917 - 1996) was an American animator, composer and inventor, widely considered to be one of the pioneers of computer animation.
